The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was founded after two veteran American Journalists conquered an adversary to Justice and the Hispanic community. The foundation story of the lobby entity is heroic and its direction since it was founded has never been anything short of heroic. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are human rights activists and both work as journalists.
They investigated the most controversial and most brutal sheriff of the twenty first century for abuse of human rights and exposed his illegal activities. Members of the Hispanic community had complained about his brutality and his discrimination for a long while and no justice body or personality had sought to intervene.
The two then decided to probe into the complaints and found enough conclusive evidence to damn the unethical law enforcer for abusing his mandate and subjecting his prisoners to inhumane conditions and degrading their dignity. Mr Arpiao had also been breaching the American constitution in a flagrant fashion by;
- Making wrongful arrests,
- Using his powers to settle personal scores,
- And racially profiling members of the Hispanic community.
Michael and Jim were aware that exposing America’s self-proclaimed toughest sheriff would have attracted severe retribution from him but they did it anyway. Sheriff Arpiao, blinded by the feeling of superiority to law that had corrupted him, thought he could arrest the two and detain them with impunity. He sort them out and took them into custody for investigating him; a legitimate journalistic mandate.
He allegedly mistreated them and demeaned their humanity. It did not even occur to him that journalists belong to a protected professional community. They later demanded justice for the illegal treatment that he put them through. They sued Maricopa County and put him to task to publicly explain his unlawful activities.
At first, the local courts determined to the favor of the county. Assuming that the local courts lacked enough freedom from the sheriff’s office or jurisdiction to determine cases with a question of constitutionality, the attorneys representing Jim and Lacey appealed further and further.
An appellate court in the ninth circuit found the Sheriff at fault and awarded of 3.7 million dollars’ worth of damages to the two journalists and human rights activists.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin made another selfless decision to continue protecting the victims of Sheriff Arpiao from his legacy and the legal precedence he had set. They decided to use the 3.7 million dollars they were awarded to create the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and fund efforts to actively protect the rights of members from minority groups.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund immediately got into keeping the legal momentum of the gains by funding other such cases to solidify the wins against impunity.
Fortunately, through studying and interacting with other forces pushing the same cause as theirs, members of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund learnt about the Open and Closed Fist Approaches to setting legal precedence. The Closed Fist Approach is an aggressive ligation device that performs best against draconian laws with unconstitutional aspects. Read more: Village Voice Media | Wikipedia and Phoenix New Time
The Open Fist Approach is less aggressive and mostly entails suing oppressive law enforcers and their employers. It assists to keep impunity in check as well as deliberate actions by individuals to water down or misinterpret the law.
